Dana White shuts down McGregor vs. Cerrone rumor: ‘Absolutely not true’

After Conor McGregor’s submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, the Irishman is willing to fight another top contender before securing an inevitable rematch with Khabib.

The word on the street is that Ultimate Fighting Championship is looking to book a lightweight matchup between McGregor and Donald Cerrone, as ‘Cowboy’ teased on Instagram that he is ‘waiting on’ ‘The Notorious’ to sign the contract.

Oddsmakers have also released betting lines for the possible matchup, with McGregor opening as a -185 favorite and Cerrone a +150 underdog.

According to head president Dana White, however, the rumors are ‘absolutely not true’ and the UFC hasn’t even considered McGregor’s next opponent.

“That’s not true,” White told TMZ Sports in a recent interview (h/t Dan Hiergesell of MMA Mania). “Absolutely not true. Obviously that’s the fight that “Cowboy” Cerrone wants but that’s not true.

“We haven’t even thought about an opponent for either one of those guys yet, meaning Khabib or Conor.”

The reason White hasn’t even discussed McGregor’s next potential opponent is because the Irishman faces a possible suspension for his involvement in last month’s UFC 229 post-fight brawl in Las Vegas.

McGregor and Khabib will meet with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) in December, where both men face possible sanctions for unsportsmanlike conduct.

“December,” White said. “So those guys go before the Nevada State Athletic Commission in December and then we’ll know what’s up.”

“We’re not even thinking about it,” White continued. “It’s not even worth talking about because we don’t know how long the suspensions are going to be, what their fines are going to be. We don’t know the penalties yet, so you can’t even think about fights until we know what the penalties are.”
